Jewelry Care 101

You wear your jewelry every day, so it’s bound to pick up a little buildup along the way. Skin oils, lotions, dirt, and everyday grime can dull the surface of your solid gold and leave it looking less shiny than when you first put it on. The good news? A little regular care goes a long way. Proper cleaning and storage will keep your jewelry looking its best and help you enjoy your pieces for years to come.

What you'll need:

1. Mild dish soap, like Dawn

2. Bowl of warm water
3. Soft-bristled toothbrush
4. Polishing cloth (optional)

Directions:

1. Mix 1tsp. of dish soap with warm water
2. Soak your jewelry in warm, soapy water for 5 minutes
3. Scrub with a soft toothbrush to remove buildup and debris
4. Rinse and dry on a clean cloth
5. Rub with a polishing cloth for an extra shine!

Jewelry Care Tips:

Store your jewelry properly. Keep your pieces in a lined jewelry box, catch-all dish, or travel roll to prevent scratching and tangling. When possible, store pieces separately so they don’t rub against or scratch one another.

Handle with care. Solid gold is durable, but it isn’t indestructible. Avoid pulling, bending, or putting unnecessary pressure on delicate chains, clasps, and moving parts.

Take off delicate pieces before swimming or showering. Even though solid gold is waterproof, enamel and certain gemstones, including opal and emerald, are more sensitive to water, chemicals, and changes in temperature.

When to see a jeweler…

Some repairs and maintenance are best left to a professional. If your jewelry has deep scratches, a loose stone, worn prongs, a broken bail, or other damage, bring it to a jeweler for an inspection. A professional can safely clean and polish your pieces, make necessary repairs, and spot small issues before they become bigger problems.
